This implies that any company can be confronted with an accident of electrical origin, often very serious (electrocution or fire). The prevention of these risks rests, firstly, on the safety of electrical installations and equipment and, on the other hand, on compliance with safety rules when they are used or when servicing on or Proximity to electrical installations.
Rare but often serious accidents
For 30 years, the number of accidents at work, as well as serious accidents due to electricity, have been declining steadily. However, the latter remain particularly serious. Every year, a dozen workers die electrocuted. In addition, accidents related to electricity can cause fires or explosions.
The construction and civil engineering, service and temporary work sectors and the food sector are among the most affected. The first minutes after an accident are very important for the chances of survival: it is necessary to act very quickly, on the one hand by cutting the current without touching the body of the victim, on the other hand by preventing immediately the rescue.
- Electricity consists of a flow of free electrons circulating in a single direction. To create a flow of electricity, it is necessary to use a conductive material (metals, graphite, human body…) connected at its ends to a generator (battery, dynamo…).
- Static electricity is formed when two insulating materials are rubbed together. Under certain conditions, it may cause fires and explosions.
