Periodic checks on equipment and accessories
The purpose of periodic checks is to detect any defect which may give rise to a dangerous situation, but not to check that the equipment complies with all the rules or technical prescriptions applicable to them. To this end, the French regulations provide for periodic general checks for an exhaustive list of equipment. It defines its content and periodicity.
The list of equipment subject to periodic checks includes lifting appliances, construction machinery and certain specific hazardous machines (presses, waste compactors, paper cutters, etc.). For the other machines, it is up to the head of the school to define an organization that can meet the same objective.
The result of these checks is recorded in a safety register (where all the incidents, anomalies, replacements of parts are also mentioned…). This register shall be kept at the disposal of the labor inspector and all persons or bodies concerned with the prevention of occupational hazards.
Periodic checks do not replace the obligation to carry out the maintenance operations defined by the manufacturer of the machine. It is recommended that you record the maintenance operations of the machines in a maintenance booklet.
In the case of lifting appliances, periodic verification shall be supplemented by a check on putting into service or restarting. This verification ensures that the appliances are installed in accordance with the specifications of the manufacturer’s operating instructions and can be used safely. The maintenance booklet is compulsory for this type of appliance (decree of 2 March 2004).
