Welders use equipment and machines for welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This unit group also includes welding and soldering machine operators with adjustable controls.

They work in companies that manufacture steel and sheet metal structural components, boilers, heavy machinery, aircraft and boats and other metal products, as well as for welding contractors and welding workshops, Or they may be self-employed.

MAIN DUTIES:

Welders and soldering and brazing machine operators perform some or all of the following duties:

Welders:

Reading and interpreting welding drawings or instructions;
Use of manual or semi-automatic apparatus, such as gas arc welding equipment with tungsten electrode (GTWA), gas arc welding with solid wire (GMWA), welding with gas- Arc welding with flux-cored wire (FCAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), arc welding with SMWA, resistance welding, submerged arc welding (SAW) and Oxyacetylene welding (OAW), for welding metal parts;
Use manual or semi-automatic flame-arresters;
Use welding and brazing equipment;
Use metal forming machines, such as bending presses and shears, as well as other metal straightening and bending machines;
Repare worn parts of metal products by welding additional layers.

Welding and Soldering Machine Operators:

Use adjustable welding machines, such as point-to-point stitch resistance welding machines, suture lines, or arc or gas welding machines to manufacture or repair metal;
Use soldering and brazing machines with adjustable controls to bind metal parts with solder or to fill holes, serrations and joints of metal items;
Signing, turning off, tuning and controlling robotic production line equipment;
Participate in the maintenance and repair of welding and brazing machines;
Adjust welding heads and machine tools according to specifications if necessary.

Welders can specialize in one type of welding in the areas of custom manufacturing, ship construction and repair, pressurized containers, structural pipeline and structural constructions, machinery and equipment repair, and aerospace precision welding.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Welders:

A high school diploma is usually required.
A three-year apprenticeship program
or more than three years of experience in the trade as well as specialized training in welding, school or industrial, are usually required to qualify for the certificate of qualification.
The certificate of qualification is mandatory in Alberta and is offered, although voluntary, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
Skilled welders can get the Red Seal.

Welding and Soldering Machine Operators:

A few years of high school are required.
On-the-job training of several months is usually provided.
Experience as an apprentice-operator of machines may be required.
An experiment in robotics may be required.

Additional Information:

The experience provides access to supervisory positions.
The Red Seal allows inter-provincial mobility.
